snowboarding in the alps was very nice. a highlight was snowboarding on the lauberhorn race course. it is the most famous swiss ski race course. i have to say that gravity is stronger there. it starts at 8,000 feet and decends for about two miles. parts are very, very steep. racers go straight. along the way, there is a little tunnel that you have to pop into and through which seems like it is tempting fate for each racer. there is the possibility of ski racer pizza if you see what i mean. so i had three sweet days in one of the most magnificent places on earth. then i traveled 19 hours beginning at 5 am sunday morning from up in the alps. i started out by walking for about 20 minutes thru the dark streets of the sleeping village. the mountains are in the foreground, not the background. their size in the dark is bigger than in the day. the three local giants black out the sky up to about halfway to looking straight up. there were stars visible above and a little snow under foot from the night before. i walked past a church that is beautiful, day or night. there was a wedding there saturday, with people who were very dressy mixing in the streets with people carrying snowboards and skis. just beyond the church i was overwhelmed by the smells of early morning baking at a shop that makes fresh breads and pasteries. it was so quiet and the air was so still. the lack of movement of any kind had really let the warm smells escaping from the building to cool and settle. i crashed into this incredible accumulation of delicious smells and it directly twisted my head toward the source. i looked to see if their lights were on in the front where customers can come in, cuz i wanted to go there and spend every last swiss franc in my pocket- hmmmmmmmmm yummmm. as it turned out- no lights and no pasteries for me. i got to the train with time to spare. from there, i took one train out of the mountains and then one that went all the way to the airport. i am glad that i only had to change trains once with my suitcase and gear. i had my snowboard and all the fixins. as you leave the mountains through the ravine that lets you escape, you ride the perimeter of two lakes. this was just after 6 am. they are not on daylight savings time so it is quite dark with dawn breaking slowly. there was a glow of pink resting between two major peaks at the opposite end of the lake. a cloud had formed right on the surface of the lake and it extended up about 100 feet into the sky. this happens when the water is warmer than the air, i guess. the sunrise was visible above it. black lake waters in front of the cloud came up close to the train. the towns along the lakeshore are gem-like with the facets of church steeples visible in every town center. the train circled past a town where my older son had just decided to walk off about 6 years ago. he found a castle where he patiently waited until we found him. the castle is still there, but thankfully he is not. from there i slipped into getting through a long day of travel. it was almost four hours by train, 9-1/2 hours on the first flight, 2 hours on the second flight, waiting in between and going through customs and immigration in washington dc. that is a line dance that is not very fun. after that, i was ready for a cold one. i sat with a guy from belgium who was on his way to montreal and had a beer. i flew about 20k miles in the last 17 days. that is a personal record. on the next to last flight, they were looking for a cardiologist, found one, and apparently were able to deal with one more exciting moment in flight without losing the passenger. karen, i thought of rich immediately.

Sympathies go out to Susan Dunham who lost her Dad last week and to Jerry Bolio whos mom died last Thursday. Remember, Stars are the forget-me-nots of Angels.
We are suppose to get our first blizzard of the season on Valentine's Day! They are predicting at least 18 inches.....so Richard, there will be snow when you get home to snowboard. So, all you procrastinators who haven't gotten your Valentine gift yet better not wait! Happy Thoughts.....

I saw a little bit of the secrets show and would like to get the DVD. It seemed sensible and yet we often have to hear what we already know before we realize it. Did you understand that??
The show on slave children in Africa was very powerful and shocking. Our kids here in the US have no idea what life could be like if they were in another country.

I am glad that today is Friday! I could use a spa day! lol....after a week with no outside recesses.
The wind is brutally cold here with below zero windchills. Just getting dustings of snow, certainly nothing like out in New York by Syracuse where they are getting up to 100 inches. I used to like After the Show that was a half hour show on with Oprah guests for impromtu time with the studio audiences. Its nolonger on Oxygen, which I think is owned by Oprah's company. Saw some today about them rescuing Slave children in Africa. We'll all have to start sending good Happy Thoughts to each other and see if they return. Positive energy circling the world sounds like a great idea. Have a great weekend everybody. Here are my Happy Thoughts..........

I didn't see that, Patti, but I did see Oprah yesterday. I don't usually watch her show, but someone told me they'd be talking about the DVD, "The Secret," so I wanted to see what they had to say. Have any of you heard anything about that movie? Suddenly people here are starting to talk about it. I haven't seen the actual movie, but it's supposed to be some kind of motivational thing. The idea is "the law of attraction," meaning that whatever thoughts, feelings, etc. you send out into the universe is what comes back to you. So if you're thinking positive, that's what will start coming to you.
Happy yodeling, Richard!
Karen, keep us posted on the matchmaking results!

That's interesting Karen, we have a Castle Inn locally too. They have nifty holidy packages and Dave and I like to go over(it's in CA) occasionally just for dinner. Staying in the castle is nice though. All the rooms are different and guests are welcome to wander through the unoccupied room to check them out. The Inn is in a beautiful setting with x-country and snow mobile trails on the property.
Did you see Paula Deen on Oprah earlier this week? It was a riot! She dropped a small glass bowl with vanilla that she was adding to her cake mix. It hit the mixer blades and went flying along with batter. She and Oprah got batter on themselves and I don't know where that bowl ended up. Made for great viewing.

Hello lonely goat herd ----You lead such a busy and challenging life. Your management changes often and you travel so much. I like the travelling part but missed the kids when I was doing it. Of course they were much younger then. They're still missable but it's not as difficult. Heaven knows they always turn up so I can get used t them again. I'm witing for Kevin to realize that Portland is not all it was cracked up to be and he'll come home!
Colin's new job with United Way starts officially this a.m. I'm glad he's finally moving out of the restaurant. He's come to realize that it's going no where and has made a big move forward. He's working with the web site of the UW, posting their info and updating the site with new organizations joining.
I'm glad that gopher said spring is on the way because I'm really tired of being so COLD. No appreciable snow just COLD. Dave is skiing at Sunday River andwill be back tonight sometime. Nice to be able to take days off in the week the way he does.
Governor Baldacci is proposing a melding of school districts that will bring us from over 1oo to 26 districts. That's all well and good for the over the top administrative costs of the state but it will also mean losing funding for over 600 teaching positions. Which has to greatly increase class sizes, which is never a good thing. I feel my retirement years calling out to me.

Have a safe trip Richard....its snowing here now. I guess we are suppose to get a couple of inches. I haven't seen the weather report yet.
Glad this week is over. Kids were off the wall hyper today. Guess we can blame the full moon/snowstorm...better then thinking I couldn't do my job! lol.

it is 6 am in a holiday inn express in newport beach and i just thought i would express myself. this hotel room looks remarkably similar to the one in santa clara and the one in atlanta and so many that i have ever been in. days and places have melted together so much that i did not know if i was in san francisco or la last night as i sat at the airport waiting for a plane. tonight i head for home, get there tommorow at lunchtime and crash for a while. by sunday morning, i will be in switzerland. hotel rooms are a little different there. with only a sheet and a down comforter you have the choice of freezing or boiling. flushing the toilet is different and a welcome challenge to this engineer. doors open in unexpected directions and the constant presence of cow bells will remind me where i am. tv shows are in many languages that are hard to understand before midnight, but are spoken in a universal language after midnight. at the moment, it is time for coffee and a breakfast bar at the newport beach holiday inn express continental breakfast- yuck.

I went to buy the US News magazine (January 20, 2007) edition and felt really stupid. I had no idea it was a weekly magazine and the new one is out on the stands already...so I couldn't get the one I wanted. Anybody have one? I guess I'll have to write to US News and see if I can get a back copy. Obviously I don't read news magazines....
We got a couple of inches of snow over the weekend and its still cold. Wind chills were so we couldn't get out again today at school. They are predicting below average temps until the middle of February.
Neil and I went to Concord yesterday to take our son out for his birthday dinner. He'll be 25 on 2/6...and hes my baby...where has all the time gone??? lol....

Yes, Patti, I managed to get in, but I still don't see that "manage post" button you mentioned. I just pressed "new post." And, no, I didn't choose to change to new blogger. I couldn't get in without changing. I stick to my old ways unless I'm forced to change.
Karen, I forgot to mention you appeared in one of my dreams recently. I don't really remember the details--just that there was dancing going on and I was impressed that you looked exactly the same as you did in high school!

so Lori I'm glad you got back in. From what I can see now, we have to click the manage posts button to be able to see the blog in the "normal view". The listed view you get when you click on view blog seems to be what used to be considered the web view I think. Were you changing to new Blogger on perpose or becaue they told you to? I couldn't get in any more without changing over to the new version. I'm not yet sure what the benefits are though.
I'm wondering if the reunion committe in Spfld. has met yet? Too soon perhaps. Though for those of us wishing to lose weight, grow our hair out, or otherwise remodel. Time is of the essence. That and the need for available hotel space for travelers.

lori, i certainly wasn't thinking of myself as a tease to be so close and yet so far. i was selfishly thinking of my time, the potential for it to be different, and hoping that i might win the lottery sometime soon. the highlights of being in this hotel complex were african drumming as a group of 60 people, doing races on adult size tricycles, and playing some pretty good ping pong during free time. othewise it was morning to night powerpoint presentations. oh, and did i mention drinking? i feel like janis joplin after a long night of southern comfort and whatever else she might have swallowed. i will go see if i can keep breakfast down and head to the airport now.

Hi. Finally managed to get into the blog--by mistake I think. Why'd they make it so complicated? I've been pressing every button in sight....
So, Richard, did you tell us your travel plans just to tease us?-- that you'll be nearby, but you don't have time for us? Every time people mention screaming kids, I get a little nervous cuz my youngest was a screamer. He was okay on airplanes, though. And now he's fine. But he had the worst scream, and I didn't handle it too well. I either screamed back or gave into him.
No, I didn't smell the fires from here, Karen.

that is funny. i don't whine and i definitely don't scream on airplanes. i did hit some bumps over tennessee that were as big as any i have ever experienced. also, i slept extremely well up to that point. i think that one of the unexpected adaptations to screaming kids on planes is that they are cutting the oxygen levels back to make everyone fall asleep. just a thought.
Richard try to bring some warmer temperatures back when you come. It is 5 degrees here now at almost 8 pm...wind chills are suppose to be 25 below or some such thing. Guess we can't complain too much....January is almost over! (except that you will notice I am complaining....especially when its indoor recess with 18 5 year olds...who can't get outside and get rid of excess energy.) Anyways, have some good flights...make sure you buckle in...we don't want to read about a VT guy getting kicked off any flight. happy Thoughts and good reading....
karen, i am reading "father and son" by larry brown. i may also read "fathers and sons" by ivan tergenev. i don't think there is any connection between the two, dunno- but i have both next to my bed. i have read a few detective, who-done-its, and books of intrigue lately. i can recommend: "motherless brooklyn" (a great one), "the confessor" (murder in the vatican) and i like walter mosley's stuff.
hi bloggers. this is as close as we will get over the next week- which is a little weird. i fly to atlanta this afternoon. i would love one of karen's home cooked meals- but noooo. i will be locked in a hotel with sales people from 7:30 am until 11:00 at night for the next three days and then a quick flight back. if i were locked in a hotel room in winooski for three days it would at least save the plane flight. then i go to san francisco from tues pm to weds pm, then to LA until thursday night when i "red-eye" it back to b'ton. no time for drinks with lori. this is not how i like to plan trips. where is the time for tour guides that i can follow and learn about the wonders that lie out there? well, i guess my mother would be happy. i will read some books during the quality time that i have on airplanes with snotty nosed kids- screeeeeming all around me. i think the payback of the kids is what she would like best.

You know Pat...you have to do what you need to do to get through this. No one can tell you...they'll try but its up to you on how you deal. Just concentrate on getting through one day at a time. Iwish I could remember the book that Hospice gave us to read on death and dying....it was a very enlightening read. Maybe you could check with your local office to see if they have a copy. I'll email you with the name...I think I lent it to someone and haven't gotten it back so I can't check that way.....sorry. The video brings up all kind of things with me too....try to remember something...and smile.

Kathi I just came back from the US News and World Report site. I'm glad you mentioned it. I watched the movie and I used the interactive video. The memories are so fresh for everyone. The mom who said that if her son wasa watching her or around her tht was fine but it didn't matter to her if she couldn't touch him, really struck a cord with me. A lot of people have said that Daddy is watching over me and that sort of thing. But if I can't hold hands with him while we watch TV and I can't call to tell him gas prices have gone down then I don't care that much about the rest of it. Maybe that will change with time.
Some husbands were very disappointed at 10:00....Big Patroit fan here. I tried to be supportive and watch with him but once they started on the downhill slide I retreated to my craftroom to do something productive! He didn't come home tonight and turn the sports talk show on right off, so that was a good thing! There is always next year....
It is winter for sure here. We (in Springfield) only got a dusting of snow over the weekend. There have been squalls but nothing significant.
If any of you read US News (or go to www.usnews.com) there is a article about Vermont Fallen where they interviewed my sister-in-law and some other parents. On the website there is also a video clip on some of the documentary they are making.

husbands went missing all over america today. then they suddenly re-appearred at 10:20 pm. the nacho stains on t-shirts were a dead give away. i resisted the professional football playoff magnet for a little more than half of each game. did some good work on my luv shak model in the basement (i know how that sounds- not sure how to say it in a less provacative way). hope you are all well.

I caught part of that too. The gist of it was staying clear of the snowplows and patiently let them do their work. I have no idea how that ended up on The Weather Channel but I thought it was great.
At the calling hours I met a gentleman who works with Richard Benjamin. I asked him to let Richard know a reunion was being planned and it would be great if he could come. John Tracey came that night. That was a huge surprise. He had seen the obituary in the Burlington Free Press. We had a nice visit. I haven't seen him in many years.
If anyone knows where Eleanor Richardson is, her birthday was the same as mine, the 6th. We were the oldest two in our class.

Pat they were featured the snow in Presque Isle Maine on the weather channel last night. I only caught the tail end so I don't know what the story was about except for this guy in a snow plow. We ended up with a dusting...windy and cold here. Nothing really tastes as it did 30 years ago! Happy Thoughts...........

We actually had a dusting of snow here in Malibu. There was a picture in the paper of a woman and her son making snowballs with their bare hands.
Not sure what moonpies are, but I always loved Devil dogs, yodels, snodels, all that stuff. We don't seem to get devil dogs out here, so I indulged my fantasy last time I was in Vermont. Not quite as good as I remembered!

Did you say moon pie? I haven't had one in years!
Here in PI the stores are just now getting crazy. The weather guy just told us about the 12 inches or more of snow we can expect starting tomorrow. I don't expect we'll stay in school very long if we go in at all. Depends on when it starts I suppose. Dave is exultant. He's ready to ski!

Winter is here too...only not as cold as Pat! Suppose to warm up some tomorrow. I hope so, the kids have been in for recess for the past two days and need some outside activity! There might be snow this weekend...so there is hope for snowboarding for you Richard! I have been watching American Idol....the judges have been so cruel ( and the contestants really horrible!) Not quite sure why some would want that 15 seconds of embarrassment!
Keep warm and Happy Thoughts.

Good morning friends
I'm going back to work today. I made the mistake of answering my phone at home so people know I am back in town. I can't continue to hide out under the guise of my leave of absence any longer At least it will be a short week.
I want to say thanks for all the cards; sympathy and birthday I've been receiving. I didn't think that many of you knew my physical address. Thanks, it really does help.
Fifteen below here this morning and wind chills to be factored in of course. I guess winter has finally come to The County.

hi karen, you have to go to london. i am not being full of hot air and all like you have not lived until blah, blah, blah! i am telling you that you have to go to london. you are a clever chick and you will figure out how to have a very good time of it. when i stayed, i found a hotel that was on the same block as the british museum that was reasonable for london and convenient. i was just surfing the web a bit now and found The Georgian House Hotel which sounds good and reasonable. i realize we have not quite gotten to that point in our relationship where i say jump and you say how high or anywhere close to that, but i am telling you to get to london. please?? here is the one that did it for me. i stood next to cleopatra. cleopatra, larger than life!!!!!, is about 4' 2" as a mummy in a glass case at the british museum. that was incredible. it makes you realize that it wasn't perfect this or that, acting as the pendulum that swung incredible people into their places in history. there is an inner tiger that goes where the tiger is going to go. i hope your tiger will go to london. let kitty out to play. you reeeeeally should. phantom of the opera blew me away. please don't be scared of finding a bit of magic, you are allowed. there are plenty of annoying things that you will experience, too. leave plenty of time to get back to the airport. holy crap, what is up with that?
Big ice storm here today. Luckily, we had the day off from school for MLK Day so won't have to make up a day. I went out to shovel the end of the driveway where the town plows push the slush back and it was heavy stuff. There was about 2 inches of it on the ground. Up North they got 4-8 inches of snow first. Kids will get soaking wet tomorrow! Karen you'll have to give the www. for the travel guru. I am sure Evan will have a safe journey and "learn" lots! Good luck meeting up with Ty! I'd like him to come redo my house! Happy Thoughts..............

Good for you! Taking a walk together is great for exercise, stress and being together.
Suppose to be freezing rain here tonight and tomorrow. Wednesday highs 19 or so...low 2, so tell Avi its going to be a little colder here! The Patroits are on at our house...hopefully, they'll win to make my hubby happy.

Lori, you'll be happy to know that its getting colder here and we woke up to a covering of snow on the ground...I think its raining now but freezing rain is in the forcast. We have had very unseasonable weather. I am sure it will catch up with us...Hope it warms up for you soon. Long weekend here...will be nice~! Happy Thoughts..........

Wonder if any of us could afford to win the HGTV 2.5 million dollar house! We'd probably have to sell it to pay the taxes..but we can all dream. At least this year there would be snow for any who liked to be outside in the cold..or nice fireplaces for those of us to hibernate. If one of us did win, we could have a "class reunion" there...lol. Karen, good luck packing up Evan. I'm sure he'll call you for goodie boxes! He'll be fine. Richard, good luck with your traveling and snowboarding...hearing we might get snow on Monday, we'll see. Pat, I hope that you arrived home safely and that you took the rest of the week to regroup. Have a great weekend everybody...I am glad that its Friday! Happy Thoughts..........

i guess that means i did not win the place in ashville- rats, i really was starting to feel at home there with the virtual tour on their website (i never saw anyone else there, i just assumed it was mine for the taking). i will definitely check colorado house out- i am sure it is very amazing. my trip to switzerland will be pretty interesting this time. last time i was just getting coffee for people. this time i will be asked my opinion on a couple of things. also, more than half my time will be in the mountains. i will snowboard- i haven't gone skiing in about a dozen years. i love any and all of that stuff- that is just the way it has gone. i may need a snowtube to protect myself over thin cover. good thing i love 'em. i can't believe how soon i will go. not sure why, just can't. well, be good, take chances, y'all.
hi karen, the suitcase cannot weigh more than 50 pounds, but he can take two 50 pound suitcases and his carry-on in economy class, right?? i am going through this for a trip in three weeks to switzerland and i am pretty sure my suitcase under 50 pounds and my snowboard bag with gear under 50 pounds are all together no extra charge for me. now if it would just snow. the place i am going is having world cup races this weekend and they are not allowing practice runs to try to preserve what little snow they have. right now there is only about a ten inch base and this is a mix of not much snow, some ice, and a lot of grass. i was at this same place (grindelwald) last summer for the beauty and got all the pics i need. now what i want is snow, snow, snow. if i put razor sharp edges on my board to hold an edge on ice, it will shred my bag before i arrive. maybe i can do sharp edges and tape them for the trip. so many details to figure out, man!

Karen, we also just entered the modern age and got skype. It was nice being able to see my family in Israel while I talked to them--though for us, it was more an experience than a conversation. Maybe that's just my family, though. None of us feels very comfortable in front of a camera, so we spent most of the time laughing. Also, there was a slight delay in sound, so it took a few seconds for our words to get to them, which was a little annoying. It was really good seeing my sister Katie's kids (ages 5 and 7), but for a normal conversation with my sisters and parents, I'll stick to the telephone--and just use skype for a group thing. Don't let me discourage you, though. Avi really liked it. He doesn't like talking on the telephone, but he did like this cuz he feels better talking to someone when he can see them. Is this more info than you wanted?!!!

Thanks Richard. You're right about feelings. I keep falling apart over stupid things. I'm tired of crying, it doesn't last but little break downs. now I'm just hanging out watching TV.
As next of kin am I allowed to wear jeans? I left home in such a hurry that's all I brought with me.
Lori I'm sorry to hear about the terrible loss in your family. That must have been so frightening for everyone.

Pat, I am so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You can't know how you will feel from moment to moment. Maybe that is one of the hardest things to understand, especially amidst everything else right now. You have my heartfelt sympathy and you have my deep respect for being the great daughter that your dad always deserved to have.
Wll we lost Daddy early this morning. Pretty much as I was walking through the hospital to his room. He was being pronounced when I walked into the room. I won't try to describe what that was like. Anyway, his obit. will be in the Burlington Free Press and the Spfld. paper. Unfortunatley everything will happen over 3 days. visiting hours monday eve. funeral tuesday at 10 and burial in duxbury on Wed. at 12.
I can't wait for TH.

hi lori, i have not been to the store (and i was not too high to remember if i had been there). it sounds more california than what i had imagined and that is sooooo great. what i was impressed by was the land and the nature. the drive from up in the canyon down to the beaches of malibu is magical in the best possible way. it definitly got through to me. i can't think of a natural place in your immediate area that i have liked more.

Maybe I'm wrong about that, Richard. I'll have to check out that place again and see if they are okay with noise. Have you been in their store? They have all this New Age stuff--music, candles, incense, books, etc. With all that relaxing love/peace stuff, I somehow couldn't imagine loud noise there--though maybe the naked hippies who live out there wouldn't care.
By the way, Roland, you gave me the credit, but it was Karen who came up with the ADHD diagnosis!
